Family Spotlight:
Heather and Staci

Here's a picture of my partner and myself plus our three-year-old triplets at our commitment ceremony in September 2003. We have been together for fourteen years. Staci, my partner, adopted the triplets that I birthed.

Our family has been affected in all the typical ways that a GLBT family is affected by not being able to marry: we carry extra life insurance, we have an extra health insurance policy (we have a "family policy" and a single policy), etc. With the addition of our children, these things become even more important. We are both self-employed (I am an attorney and Staci is a CPA) and these extra financial hardships mean that we spend money on things that married couples do not at the expense of our children and their college education funds.
