The Issues:
HIV/AIDS

How You Can Support HIV Prevention Efforts

  • Learn the facts about HIV transmission and prevention. See http://www.thebody.com/whatis/faqs.html for HIV prevention and management information. Special assistance to persons who are newly diagnosed with HIV is also available at http://www.poz.com.

  • Make sure your friends and loved ones know the facts and protect themselves.

  • Know your status. Get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI).

  • Fight Oppression! HIV is a disease of oppression. By supporting the National Black Justice Coalition, Equality Maryland, American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and other organizations working toward full equality for LGBT communities, you are fighting HIV.

  • Oppose proposals in the Maryland General Assembly to reduce funding for public health, including mental health, drug treatment, HIV prevention, and HIV care services.

  • Contact the Governor's office to increase state support to HIV prevention and treatment efforts.

  • Contact your Members of the U.S. Congress. Urge them to reverse the trend (of the last several years) of annually declining resources to prevent the transmission of HIV in the United States.

  • Support efforts to authorize needle exchange projects in jurisdictions with significant HIV infection due to the sharing of injection drugs, such as in Prince George's County.

  • Support efforts to ensure that all young people have access to culturally appropriate, science-based sexuality and HIV prevention education. Visit SIECUS at http://www.siecus.org and http://www.plannedparenthood.org to learn more.
