Political Action Committee

Equality Maryland Political Action Committee (EQMD PAC), a sponsored committee of Equality Maryland, Maryland’s statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) advocacy organization was established in 2006 to help elect legislators with a commitment to the issues that are most important to our families, our communities and our futures.

We tend to think of national and state elections as remote affairs, immune to the influence of an individual vote. But consider this: the 2000 presidential election was decided by a mere 537 votes – that was the margin of victory in the decisive Florida election.

Many Maryland legislative races are shaping up to be just as close – and just as critical. Elections are held every four years for the Maryland General Assembly with all seats currently up in November of 2006. The individuals who represent us in Annapolis will be vital in determining the course Maryland and the nation follow in the future. Consider this:

  • Do your elected officials support legislation to protect individuals from workplace discrimination on the basis of real or perceived gender identity?
  • Do they oppose amending the U.S. or Maryland Constitutions to include discrimination against LGBT families?
  • Do they support legalizing same-sex marriages, so LGBT families and their children have the right to social security benefits, adoption rights, healthcare coverage, hospital visitation, and family and medical leave?
  • Do they believe “conversion therapy” should be included in public school health curriculums?

Equality Maryland PAC understands the importance of the upcoming election. The PAC will announce its endorsements for the upcoming election very soon. All candidates were invited to take part in the endorsement process. A questionnaire has been developed to ascertain the level of commitment to LGBT equality by candidates for the Maryland General Assembly.

Those who filled out a questionnaire are eligible for endorsement. While there are clearly many issues affecting the LGBT community that will be included in such an endorsement process, none rises to the level as does that of constitutional discrimination.

Equality Maryland PAC seeks to use contributions to reward endorsed candidates who support its positions and defeat those legislators who are in opposition. Please click here to donate now and play a critical role in electing a fair-minded General Assembly in 2006!
