EQUALITY MARYLAND WELCOMES NEW FIELD ORGANIZER
Longtime Activist to Promote Outreach to Religious, Rural and Minority Communities
Silver Spring, Md. –– Equality Maryland, Maryland's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender statewide advocacy organization, announced today the appointment of Meredith Moise as its new Field Organizer. Moise, who resides in Baltimore City, is a passionate human rights advocate who has served as a freelance writer for LGBT and African American-targeted publications; a core volunteer at the Portal, Baltimore’s black LGBT community center; and a Deacon at St. Sebastian United Reform Catholic Church. She has also been a teacher, truancy counselor, child protective service worker and social justice activist.
“We are very excited to have Meredith’s persuasive, articulate voice to help us move closer to equality and inspire citizens to action,” said Executive Director Dan Furmansky. “She will be a key force in our efforts to protect Maryland from constitutional tampering.”
In addition to helping with the upcoming legislative session, Meredith’s efforts will be focused on establishing a speaker’s bureau to speak with religious groups, high schools, colleges, businesses and civic groups. She will also work to promote activism beyond the Baltimore-Washington corridor, as well as educational and community outreach to the African American and other minority communities.
“It is an honor to serve Maryland’s LGBT community and our allies as the work ahead of us is crucial to the advancement of the ideals of freedom, equality and fairness in our state and in our nation,” Moise noted. “In order to affect real change in the hearts and minds of the public, our movement must show how diverse the LGBT community actually is.”
According to 2000 U.S. Census data, of the more than 11,000 households headed by same sex couples in Maryland, 4, 977 are headed by African-American same-gender loving couples.
